Sex and the summer

The weather is getting warmer, the sun brighter, and our sex lives wilder. It is a cliché saying that summer is the time for loving. However, The Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine did a study that showed that sexual activity is actually at its peak in the summer months. So, if you are experiencing boosted sex drive at the beginning of summer, you are not alone — and it’s scientifically proven. Here is why:

1. Harvard Medical School psychiatrists suppose it’s the sun that makes you experience the summer lust. Being exposed to the sun increases your serotonin levels, which are the key neurotransmitters allowing you to experience a pleasure. As your body receives the vitamin D (no pun intended), your brain keeps seeking extra sources of pleasure, which thus improves your sex drive.

2. Secondly, it’s simple biology. In the summer everyone is wearing fewer clothes. The study by Frontiers in Psychology has proved that when a person is wearing less clothes the others around are more likely to be attracted to him/her simply because of the visual appeal of the display of the skin and the body.

3. The Society 19 claims that the summer season is also an ‘I just broke up with my boyfriend’ season. It is the season of breakups after high school or college graduations; many couples are going their separate ways and looking for fun rebounds during the summer. Besides, for many, this means traveling abroad and hoping for an international summertime adventure.

4. Finally, it’s a health thing as well. As the majority of us are working on our beach bodies, eating more healthy, and working out, it naturally boosts our libido as well. Sexologist Dr. Jess O’Reilly, in her podcast Sex with Dr. Jess, says that exercise is one of the most effective ways to increase your sexual desire.

The only bad news is, increase in sexual activity during summertime also means greater STDs transmission. So, try enjoying your summer safely, both in regard to your reproductive health and Covid-19.
