The big sick

The Big Sick (2017) starred Kumail Nanjiani American comedian, whose real-life relationship with his wife -Emily Gordon- inspired the film.

In the movie, Nanjiani depicts a young Pakistani man who struggles with his parents’ expectations for an arranged marriage as he dates Emily, a woman outside of his culture. But when Emily suddenly falls into an illness-induced coma, Kumail bonds with the girl’s parents and realizes that she is more important to him than his parents’ approval.

Theory of everything

The Theory of Everything (2014) is based on the life of the widely celebrated scientist Stephen Hawking.

The film depicted the marriage between Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and his wife Jane (Felicity Jones) as well as Stephen’s progressive physical weakening from ALS, a disease that attacks the nervous system. According to Hawking the movie is “broadly true”, since it was based on Jane’s memoir.

Southside with you

The main characters of Southside With You (2016) are based on two well-known political figures, Barack (Parker Sawyers) and Michelle Obama (Tika Sumpter).

The biographical drama follows the couple first date in 1989. According to the film’s director Richard Tanne the trajectory of the date is about 90 percent accurate.

The vow

The Vow (2012) was inspired by the story of Kim (Channing Tatum) and Krickitt Carpenter (Rachel McAdams).

Ten weeks after their wedding day the young couple got into a car accident that resulted in Krickitt losing her memories of the the time period when she met and fell in love with her husband. Even though her memory never recovered, her husband stayed with her and they fell in love again.
